First United Methodist Church financially supports many missions, including the ones listed below. These missions are where the people of First Church have chosen to be physically involved in some way in order to help those who are hurting.

The DAYSTAR Center for Spiritual Recovery is a light of hope for youth and adults seeking to escape from the darkness of substance abuse. This ministry, which is affiliated with the Central PA Conference of the United Methodist Church, conducts both treatment and follow-up programs, plus assistance with locating jobs for those in recovery from their addictions. The center is located at 125 North 18th Street, Harrisburg.
For over 30 years, the annual Crop Walk has been an opportunity for people to raise money for the hungry by walking two to six miles. The walk is sponsored by Church World Service with 75% of the funds going to world hunger projects and 25% supporting local projects. This event is held in October of each year.
This non-profit, international ministry meets the housing needs of the world’s poor. Habitat for Humanity builds sturdy inexpensive houses, which are then sold to families with no interest fees. Habitat also provides supportive services and other ministries to the families. There are many volunteer opportunities available for all skill levels.
The mission of New Hope is to serve the human needs of the local community. This includes, distributing food, counseling, and providing activities for young people. Donations of food and money are always accepted. Fundraisers include “Walk for Hope” and “Hoops for Hope” basketball tournament.
Mission Central is a related entity of the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church involved in mission education, mission outreach, and disaster response. There are numerous volunteer opportunities to serve for every age level. Mission outreach includes: cleaning buckets, health kits, school kits, layette kits, mission trips, computer ministry, and much more.
United Methodist Home for Children
Children and Youth Services place young people at this home located in Mechanicsburg. Volunteers are always welcome to visit and spend time with the children. All of the children living at the home attend Sunday School and other events at First Church for their religious education and fellowship.
This emergency facility, located on the grounds of the United Methodist Home for Children, is a safe place for youth in crisis. First Church sends a team of caring and compassionate individuals to provide religious education on a weekly basis. Additional help is always appreciated.
Since 1910, this Christian, community-based center has met the needs of their neighbors in Harrisburg. Programs include preschool, before and after school programs, summer camp, caring closet, eyeglass program, counseling for young moms, etc. Numerous volunteer opportunities are available.
