Today Pastor Lucretia spoke on perspective and how quickly perspective can be changed by big events. This is illustrated in any number of big life changes — marriage, the birth of a child, the loss of a loved one, etc., our life is literally turned ‘upside down, and inside out.’
For the people of Haiti this couldn’t be more true than it is today. Life has turned upside down and inside out for them.
As I read about the tragedy that has taken the lives of a shocking number of people, I am struck by the descriptions of the survivors. A blog writer for The New Yorker who has been in Haiti said the images we see fail to convey, “The incredible, palpable ebullience and will to survive—the uncomplaining fortitude of the Haitians.”
Wow. In the face of incredible loss, unimaginable destruction, and life turned upside down, I’m not sure how I’d respond.
I also read about a survivor pulled from rubble after more days than anyone should still be alive. His first action was to find a church to give thanks to God. He sustained himself on prayers and faith. And this is what we must do.
Through the many changes in our lives that are bound to come, prayer to a loving God is our centering constant.

To praise God because of who he is, rather than what happens to us, is a demonstration of faith that can move mountains and people. I hope to live inside out and upside down in our world by doing just that.
