First Church will host “18 Wounds of Disability,” an insightful presentation on the wounds that individuals and families affected by disability may experience.
The event is free and open to the public. All are invited and encouraged to attend at one of the following times: Sunday, May 5 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. (lunch provided), and Tuesday, May 7 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Most people will experience at least temporary disability within their lifetime. Disability affects people in every age group, social class and culture. It is often accompanied by a profound sense of devaluation that can be compounded by societal attitudes and actions toward those affected by disability.
“18 Wounds”, presented by Lisa Wickenheiser, M.Ed., seeks to provide insight and build a foundation of understanding and sensitivity. Specifically, we will discuss how the church can move to counter devaluation, so that those living with disability can learn what it is to be loved and accepted by God.
The presentation is based on the works of Wolf Wolfensberger, one of the world’s most impactful professionals in the area of intellectual disabilities; Dr. Jeff McNair of California Baptist University and the Christian Institute on Disability/Joni & Friends, Inc.; and his wife, Kathi McNair.
Those who wish to attend are asked to RSVP by April 23 to the church, 717.766.4611 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
