Volunteers in Mission: Our Susquehanna Conference Missional Board develops teams of everyday people wishing to serve the Lord in a hurting world by serving others where they live. What is God calling you to do? Visit the VIM website at http://www.susmb.org/ to learn about opportunities to serve on mission trips locally, nationally and internationally.
Habitat for Humanity: This international organization builds new homes or refurbishes used ones to provide sturdy, inexpensive housing for those in need. Volunteers are needed to work on job sites, provide administrative support to families and assist in the Habitat office.
Mission Central: This local warehouse is a central collection and distribution site for numerous relief items. Items are distributed locally and globally in response to disasters and to missionaries to share as needed. Children, youth and adults are welcome to volunteer with things like assembling of relief kits and school kits.
The United Methodist Home for Children: First Church supports a home in Mechanicsburg. Children and youth, some of them in crisis, seek refuge in this facility. Many of them attend Sunday School at our church and volunteers are needed to interact with these children and youth on a regular basis.
Bethesda Mission: Provides shelter, food and clothing, and shares the good news of Jesus Christ with those in need. Volunteers are needed to bag groceries, help in the youth center, participate in the mobile street ministry and other outreach ministries.
Neighborhood Center: This center, located in Harrisburg, provides a safe place for children to go during the summer and after school. First Church supports this ministry through donations and various fundraisers.
New Hope Ministries: Located in Mechanicsburg, this ministry seeks to serve human need in the local community. This includes providing food, counseling and positive activities for young people. First Church aids this by collecting food and donations, and provides space for an after school program and a kids club.
United Methodist Women: In addition to meeting for fun and creative fellowship, this group of women is on a mission to know God and to improve the world. Five “circles” of women sponsor or participate in numerous projects to benefit the community and hold several special events yearly.
DAYSTAR Center for Spiritual Recovery: The mission of DAYSTAR is to empower persons to overcome the devastating effects of substance abuse through spiritual resources, positive relationships, therapeutic counseling and practical aid. We support them by our time and using our talents to help create winning recovery programs for addicts.
Backyard Missions: Helping Our Neighbors: Backyard Missions connects volunteers from First Church with local residents who need occasional assistance. Most Backyard projects are short-term tasks to help residents maintain their homes and property. This includes yard work, raking leaves, snow removal and general household duties (spring cleaning, for example). Backyard volunteers will take on other tasks as appropriate and as they are able. There is no charge to receive help from Backyard Missions; all work is performed by church members and youth who volunteer their time and service. To request help from Backyard Missions, contact (717) 766-4611 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Recipients need not be a member of First Church or any church to receive assistance.
