100 Year-Old Letter to First Church

[Contributed by Tom Mullikin]

As part of the Centennial Celebration of the Declaration of Independence in 1877, the town of Mechanicsburg invited a number of persons and organizations from the town to provide items to be sealed in an iron chest. This chest was to be opened 100 years later during an anticipated Bicentennial Celebration. A newspaper article, dated May 26, 1877, from Mechanicsburg’s The Saturday Evening Journal, describes this event:

The iron chest that is designed to be kept intact for 100 years will be packed and finally closed by a public demonstration in Franklin Hall on Wednesday, May 30, 1877. An admittance fee will be charged for adults of $1.20 and children half price.

New Community Site Theme

without comments

Don’t worry - you’re in the right place even though things look different. We’ve activated a new theme for the Community Site, so things that used to be on the right are now on the left (and vice-versa). The content and function are the same, though, and we hope you find this layout more useful than the old.

Sunday School in Review - During this Sunday Morning our Church was honored to have Terri Maclay, a representative for CURE Internation www.helpcurenow.org a local organization in Lemoyne PA. She spoke on their program Village of Protection a place where Massai women can find safety and protection in Narok, Kenya. This inspirational and hands on “show and tell” event was arrange for our combined adult Sunday School Program in Summer 2008. My wife Susanna asked to introduce her friend of many years and talked of their joint love of gardening along with the tragic lose of Terri’s husband who died of cancer a few years back. Gene and Terri had planned their retirement years together when he was taken from us; after which Terri found a Mission in Africa to participate in, to give her love and time to, God works in mysterious ways. If you are inclined to support this program donations will be accepted at CURE note on your check that the money is to support the “Village of Protection” program in Africa.
