Our Special Needs Ministry is led by the Access Ministry Team.  The goal is to provide access to spiritual growth and worship to all God’s children.  God has a plan and a place in the church for each of us regardless of our abilities.  The Access Ministry Team continues to lead First Church as we grow in (1) identifying and breaking down the barriers that keep people with special needs and their families from participating fully in the life of the church; and (2) supporting families in the larger community who are living with special needs.  Opportunities at First church include:

Rejoicing Spirits:

The Rejoicing Spirits ministry reaches out to enrich the spiritual lives of individuals with intellectual or developmental special needs along with their families, friends and other supportive community members.  God’s message of love is shared through meaningful and adapted Christian worship services and fellowship time.  Individuals are free to be themselves while actively participating as contributing members in an inclusive faith community.  See Rejoicing Spirits video here.

Worship services are held the 4th Sunday each month (unless otherwise noted) at 4:00 pm and include:

*music and joyous singing

*brief, meaningful messages

*be yourself; we have a “no shushing” policy

*many ways to lead, serve and participate

*fellowship opportunities

*wheelchair accessibility

*light refreshments

*Everyone in the community is welcome!

*All faiths are welcome!

These services can meet the spiritual needs of individuals in one of three ways:

*a first step for those wanting to be involved in a faith community

*a complementary worship & fellowship experience for those already belonging to a faith community

*an accepting, inclusive faith community that may meet the current needs of some individuals

Day of Pampering:

This annual outreach, held on the last Saturday of February, is a time devoted to loving, serving and honoring primary care providers (mothers of children with special needs and wives of husbands with special needs).  The church and the community come together to share God’s love in a most special way with all of those in attendance.  We transform our church facility into a beautiful retreat and offer a full-day event which includes:  morning refreshments; worship & reflection; elegant luncheon; hair cuts/styles; nail care; makeup; waxing & threading; massage therapy; reflexology; relaxation techniques; luxurious foot soaks; health screenings & assessments; prayer room; foot washing; tea room; fellowship & networking.
